The Central University of Paraguay (UCP) is spearheading an ambitious urban project to transform the capital’s historic district into an academic and residential ecosystem that will attract thousands of international students.

Asunción, October 2, 2026 — The Historic Center of Asunción is preparing for a radical transformation focused on repopulation and economic revitalization. The Central University of Paraguay (UCP) launched the University District, an initiative integrated into the “Asunción 500 Years” strategy that aims to mobilize nearly US$200 million in investments over the next five years.

Project Highlights

• Investment and Development: The plan calls for a total investment of approximately US$200 million over five years, of which US$20 million is earmarked directly for academic infrastructure in the first three years.

• Initial Timeline: The first phase officially begins in February 2027 with the relocation of the UCP School of Medicine to the downtown area, initially involving about 1,000 students.

• Attracting international students: The goal is to enroll between 5,000 and 6,424 students by 2032, with a strong presence of young people primarily from Brazil.

• A comprehensive ecosystem: Beyond the classrooms, the district plans to include student housing, dining options, retail spaces, health services, gyms, and cultural centers to ensure round-the-clock activity.

• Impact on consumption: It is estimated that the student population will generate direct spending of approximately US$144 million per year, promoting the revitalization of vacant or underutilized buildings in the area.
